Well today, lets start at the beginning. And by the beginning, I mean the theme song.
Yes, even the theme song has secrets.
Did you notice it? Right before the episode actually plays, the final image of the theme song is this:
Anyway, this is the triangle guy. Before his name being confirmed as Bill Cipher, he was known as Mr. Pyramid.
This guy is based of the Eye of Providence- fancy name, I know. But most of you the Eye of Providence before.
It is on the back of the US One Dollar bill.
The eye as the capstone on an unfinished pyramid is known as the Eye of Providence, or the all seeing eye.
Which is very fitting.
Although most of you have only just found out about Bill in the newest episode, he has always been there. And not just in the theme song.
He has always been there. At first people just thought it was a coincidence, or just a symbol that is just floating through the show. Well ladies and gentlemen, you are wrong.
The most recent episode as of now is 'Dreamscaperers'.
When Bill encounters Dipper, Mabel, and Soos; he addresses them as the following:
"Ah, Stan's family, we meet at last! Question mark, shooting star, pine tree. I had a hunch that I'd bump into you!" - Bill Cipher, Dreamscaperers
As you can see, those symbols are shown in a circle around Bill in the photo. This shows that each symbol could represent a character.
Compare the two following pictures:
Each symbol has been shown in the show.
Question Mark~ This is on Soos' shirt, he wears it in every episode. Bill refers to him as 'Question Mark' when he first meets Soos.
Ice Bag~ The ice bag has been in many episodes. But I think it represents Wendy, because in her little roof hangout spot, she has an ice box. Also, in the Time Traveler's Pig, Dipper had to get her ice for her eye.
Crescent Moon Shape~ This symbol is on Stan's fez, representing Stan.
Pine Tree~ Obviously representing Dipper. The pine tree is on his hat, and 'Pine Tree' is what Bill refers to him as at the first encounter.
Five Pointed Star~ This star is shown to be on the top of the Gideon's Tent of Telepathy. It most likely
represents Gideon. [And curiously, there is an eye within the middle of it... What that means, I don't know.]
Six Fingered Hand~ This hand is on Books 2 and 3. Book 2 is owned by Gideon, and Book 3 is owned by
Dipper. The six fingered hand could represent the author who wrote the books, or the books themselves.
Llama~ This was on one of Mabel's sweaters. She wore it in The Hand that Rocks the Mabel, after Wax Larry King from Headhunters tells her so:
Mabel: "Hey Dipper. What do you think is better? Sequins, or llama hair?"
So this means the llama might represent Wax Larry King, because Mabel is actually represented by something else. I don't think a character would be shown twice.
Shooting Star~ This symbol is on Mabel's signature sweater. She wears it in the theme song and the first episode, Tourist Trapped. Bill addresses her as 'Shooting Star' when he first meets her.
Sewn Bleeding Heart~ This symbol is on Robbie's hoodie. He always wears it.
Glasses~ These glasses appear in the episode Carpet Diem. It is laying on the top of a set of drawers, and Stan picks them up. Later on in the episode, he is holding and inspecting them while watching the TV show 'Baby Fights'. The glasses might have belonged to him, but like I said earlier, I don't think a character would be shown twice.
And those are all the symbols.
What all of the characters I mentioned before have to do with each other, I don't know. Possibly it means that each character is vital to the series, or those are the ones that Bill is always watching.
What do I mean by always watching?
The following pictures are from Book 2 and Book 3, when Gideon tries to summon Bill, and when Dipper looks him up in the journal.
Book 2 Text:
✧ "Creature #326"
✧ "Name: ???"
✧ An arrow pointing at (?)'s* glasses: "!!!"
✧ "Ten symbols! What is the significance?"
✧ "mythic number" (names?)
✧ "816 816 816" This is 618 backwards. You can read more about it here.
✧ "He’s in my wallet!" with a little illustration of the $-12 bill. The bill says “semper vigilantem" at the top, which is latin for “always watching." The bottom says “curia in-" something. But is cut off by Gideon’s hand. “Curia" is latin for “court."
✧ Another interesting thing to note is the little illustration of the eye-motif birch trees. Perhaps this is
one of the signs that Bill is coming.
✧ "Bill Cipher"
✧ "Is he watching me?"
✧ "CAESAR", “ATBASH", and “A1Z26" are crossed off. They’re references to the ciphers* used in the show so far.
✧ This is really fun to read. It says: “Bill has proven himself to be one of the friendliest and most trustworthy individuals that I’ve ever encountered in my life. What a guy! I honestly …’t trust him more. Not evil … Bill is a true gentleman." And of course this is all crossed on in red… ink. Under it, it says "… CAN’T BE" [trusted] probably. Makes you wonder if the reason the book originally said you can’t trust anyone in Gravity Falls… is because of Bill.
✧ There’s a cute drawing of Bill in a profile illustration of a head. Sections of the mind include:
“Reflectives", “The Ladies", “Domestic", and “Mor," something.
✧ Then at the very end in bold red letters is “DO NOT SUMMON AT ALL COSTS!"
*more on 'ciphers' in tomorrow's post, Of Cryptograms and Ciphers.
So pretty much, this guy is very important. And the 10 symbols are very important as well, since the symbol wheel actually appeared in the episode.
And there yah go.
BOOM. That's Bill Cipher for you guys.
Now about the other antagonist: Gideon Charlie Gleeful.
Okay, those are the basics about this guy.
Gideon Gleeful is Stan's mortal enemy.
He wants the Shack for himself, with most likely a very important reason for doing so:
"NO! It's not just about revenge! I want that Shack. The PHYSICAL. BUILDING. "
What secret does the Shack hold, hm?
And let's not forget that about Robbie, Wendy's ex-boyfriend. Post breakup Robbie? That can't be good...
That's it for the antagonists! Later dorks.
