The theme song opens up a lot of things, we learned that yesterday. Now for some more parts of the theme song you need to know. If you need to, watch it again:
Near the end, the photographs being thrown unto the table foreshadow a lot of episodes.
As you can see, there is a gnome [Tourist Trapped], 'Lil Gideon [The Hand That Rocks the Mabel] Blendin Blandin [The Time Traveler's Pig], the Summerween Trickster [Summerween], and a pterodactyl [Land Before Swine].
At the end, if you listen closely, there is a whisper. It says 'I am still here', but when reversed, it says 'Three letters back'. This applies to decoding certain codes.
What codes, you ask?
Well yesterday, we talked about Bill Cipher. Check this out:
If you look, you see a message on the right side of the photo. More specifically: 'VWDQ LV QRW ZKDW KH VHHPV'. When you apply the 'Three Letters Back' rule, the message says 'Stan is not what he seems'. [Oooh! Mysterious!]
But that's not all.
As you all should know by now, in Gravity Falls, you must keep your mind sharp and eyes open.
The whole 'Three Letters Back' thing is known as the 'Caesar Cipher'.
The Caesar ciphers used in Gravity Falls substitute the original letter for the third letter after it. In the case for letters X, Y, and Z you must cycle through to the beginning of the alphabet.
But where else can you apply this cryptogram, hm? There is a game on the Disney website called 'Mystery Shack Mystery'.
In Mystery Shack Mystery, look on Stan's desk to see a cryptogram that reads "HYHU QRWLFHG VWDQV WDWWRR." Once decoded, it reads "EVER NOTICED STANS TATTOO."
Remember? This is how we know Stan's tattoo must have some importance to the show [I told you guys to make note!]
Another game, Rumble's Revenge, has 12 cryptograms:
Those random capital letters in the middle of the sentence aren't a mistake. Take each capital letter from each sentence, and guess what it spells.
It spells "MY NAME IS BILL".
As in, Bill Cipher. Told you he was important! Note these messages though, since he wrote them.
Have you been watching? During the credits, there is always a cipher that needs to be solved. Whether it is an important hint or funny joke, it has always been there.
This is from the first episode, Tourist Trapped. Once decoded using the Ceasar Cipher, it says "WELCOME TO GRAVITY FALLS".
The following photos are the credits from the episodes using the Ceasar Cipher, with the decoded message. Click the pictures to see the decoded messages:
Explanations for the codes? Yeah, I'll give you them.
In The Legend of the Gobblewonker, it says "NEXT WEEK: RETURN TO BUTT ISLAND". This is more of a joke, since in the following episode it did not take place there at all.
And in Headhunters, when it says "HE'S STILL IN THE VENTS"? This means Wax Larry King is still there. He's still alive...
"CARLA, WHY WON'T YOU CALL ME?" from The Hand that Rocks the Mabel is not a spoiler. In the Gideon's commercial for the Tent of Telepathy, at the end, the narrarator says, "Carla, I’ve always loved you but I never had the guts to say it."
Remember the dolphin man from The Inconviencing?
Yeah, him. When Mabel rides him, she yells:
Thus explaining the decoded code of "ONWARDS AOSHIMA!"
And finally, "MR. CAESARIAN WILL BE OUT NEXT WEEK. MR. ATBASH WILL SUBSTITUTE" from Dipper vs. Manliness. This is different from the other codes, since it is not referring to the episode itself.
'Mr. Ceasarian' refers to the Ceasar Cipher. 'Mr. Atbash' refers to the Atbash Cipher. Which leads me into the next part...
In the next episodes, in the credits, they no longer use the Ceasar Cipher. Instead they use the Atbash Cipher.
This is decoded by reversing the letter, an example includes that an A turns into a Z.
The following are screenshots of the cryptograms in the credits. Click the pictures to see the decoded message:
"PAPER JAM DIPPER SAYS: "AUUGHWXQHGADSADSADUH!" is a joke, in reference to it's episode, Double Dipper.
The cryptogram from Irrational Treasure, "E. PLURIBUS TREMBLEY", is actually in Latin. It means 'Out of many, Trembley'.
"NOT H.G. WELLS APPROVED" from The Time Traveler's Pig is in reference to H.G. Wells. He wrote a fictional book on time travel.
"SORRY DIPPER, BUT YOUR WENDY IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE" from Fight Fighters, "THE INVISIBLE WIZARD IS WATCHING" from Little Dipper, and "BROUGHT TO YOU BY HOMEWORK: THE CANDY" from Summerween are jokes, in references to their episodes.
And the final Atbash Cipher from Boss Mabel: "HEAVY IS THE HEAD THAT WEARS THE FEZ". This means Mabel and Stan. When they wear the fez, they might be strict, rude, and to the point, but it is all in order to help the business. [Or, they might be talking about just Grunkle Stan. And we all know that he is a suspicious guy...]
Thought that was all?
The A1Z26 cipher is a simple substitution cipher. You replace the letter from the alphabet with what number in the alphabet it is. For example, A would be 1, B would be 2, etc.
"NEXT UP: "FOOTBOT TWO: GRUNKLE'S GREVENGE" from Bottomless Pit, "VIVAN LOS PATOS DE LA PISCINA" from The Deep End, "BUT WHO STOLE THE CAPERS?" from Carpet Diem, and "IT WORKS FOR PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGS!" from Land Before Swine are jokes in reference to the episode.
"VIVAN LOS PATOS DE LA PISCINA" is in Spanish, though. It means "LONG LIVE THE POOL DUCKS".
And "HAPPY NOW, ARIEL?" from Boyz Crazy is a message from Alex Hirsch, the creator of the show, to his sister Ariel. When she was younger, she was obsessed with Lance Bass from 'N Sync. So, Alex got him to voice the band in the episode, Sev'ral Timez.
The decoded message from Dreamscaperers is kinda self-explanatory.
Now you know about the codes. What else can I tell you? Find out tomorrow in 'Of Truths and Theories'!
